Cyber Security

The Working Group is engaged in forming national and international partnerships understanding approaches to address cyber threats and electronic that tackle online crime, to reduce digital risk, and build public confidence in online safety in the age of AI. With AI increasing the scale and sophistication of fraud, this includes advancing UK leadership and engaging in forming national and international partnerships in internet policing and governance to ensure a secure digital environment that protects consumers, businesses, and competitiveness.

The Group has discussed cyber security issues in the UK and in an international context, including security by design, post-quantum cryptography, cyber insurance, consumer IoT safety, Artificial Intelligence, cross-border law enforcement access, as well as computer-assisted electronic crime such as fraud.

Briefings and publications have been arranged with the National Cyber Security Centre, the Metropolitan Police, and Cyber Resilience Centres.  DPA Director, Dr Louise Bennett gave evidence to the Telecommunications (Security) Bill Scrutiny Committee.

DPA Briefing for Parliamentarians: Quantum Computing & Encryption

Knowledge of key points in cyber security can help Parliamentarians support people and small-and-medium-sized organisations (SMEs) in their constituencies to learn about computing, its weaknesses and ways to protect themselves from threats exploiting those vulnerabilities. Post-quantum cryptography (QC) is becoming one of these key security areas. It arises from developments in quantum computing which, while expected to bring major transformational benefits to society, also put at risk the security of sensitive information and financial transactions worldwide.
